You Project Sailboat – Finding Information Online
By Trip Smith

So, you have purchased a project sailboat, now its time to fix it up. But, if you have never done any repair work, painting, fiber glassing and all of the other tasks that come with fixing up a sailboat, then how do you learn. Well if you are like a lot of people in today’s society you look around the internet for some how-to websites.

Myself, I was once a dreamer with my first project sailboat. I didn’t know a whole lot about what I was doing. I had read a little bit hear and there on the internet and figured, “How hard could it be?” Once I got into the boat saw the different things that needed repair I quickly realized that I didn’t have all the knowledge needed to fix the boat correctly. So I jumped on my computer and searched… and searched… then I searched a little more.

I would find useful information every so often but I could never seem to find a lot of information at one website. I searched for my particular sailboat hoping that someone else had documented their restoration when they fixed theirs up. Every once and a while I would come up with something closely related to my boat but it just wasn’t worth all the hours of searching the internet to find that one thing that may or may not help me. The reason, I believe, that it is so hard to find information is because people generally start a blog about their work. This blog could be on any of the thousands of blogging websites. Most people use a major search engine like Google or Yahoo to search for information. The problem with this is a blog or even a personally owned website may never show up in a big search engine’s results. This is because that one site that you are looking for may not be that popular in itself, and the big search engines don’t care about little sites like that.

Since then, I have purchased more project sailboats; still I get online and search. But I have come up with a few places where I go regularly and get some useful information. One place is online forums. These can be very helpful. Often times you can get on a forum and find someone who has restored the same boat you have, and they may even have some old photos they wouldn’t mind digging up for you to check out and get ideas from. If you can’t find someone like that then, if you are on a good sailing forum, there are plenty of people out there who are willing to chime in and give their bit of advice. They can help you with some very specific problems that you may not be able find anywhere else on the internet. Individual people are really the best way to get information on a project sailboat and an online forum is probably the easiest.

My favorite forum for getting information about my project sailboats is Sailnet.com, it is probably the largest online sailing community, at least the biggest one I could find with the friendliest people.

Another good place to get information on project sailboats, or if you are just doing some modifications to your boat to make life aboard more comfortable is a website called Sailing and Such. Remember I told you that I never could find all those small sites on the big search engines, well this site found them and posted links to all of them! Think about it, you don’t have to search anymore, when you have hundreds of links to videos and websites about fixing up a particular sailboat (maybe even yours), all of the work has been done for you.

So, go and check out http://www.Sailnet.com and http://www.SailingandSuch.com Log into the forums, ask your questions, visit Sailing and Such and look at all the project boats. Even if yours isn’t there you can still look at all of the other boats to get an idea of what kind of work lays ahead of you. Most of the website there are like illustrated how-to guides made by people just like you. Good luck with your project boat! Fair Winds!

I am not affiliated with Sailnet other than the fact that I am a member of the forums there
