  1. Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the longest single span bridges in the world. It was built during the great depression to provide work for the unemployed. The bridge is an architectural marvel that was constructed from each side of the harbour until the famous span met in the middle. It was opened in 1932 and is affectionately nicknamed the coat hanger, by locals.

  1. The Sydney Opera House

The iconic Sydney Opera House was opened in 1973. Its design was the result of a competition that was won by architect Jorn Utzon. The building sits on Bennelong Point. This area was the home of the Aboriginal man Bennelong, who befriended the first governor of New South Wales. The Opera House is an iconic masterpiece of design and engineering and is a symbol of Sydney which is recognised around the world.

Fort Denison was originally an island of rock known by the Aborigines as Mattewanye. After colonisation it was used as a place of punishment for convicts and named Pinchgut. The tower was built on the island in 1857. Fort Denison is open to the public for tours and is now home to a museum and maritime navigation system.

Located on the tip of Kirribilli Point on the north side of the harbour, Admiralty House is one of the most beautifully situated residences in Sydney. The house gained its name because of its past associations with the navy. In 1885 it was the home of the Admiral of the Navy. The house went through several ownership changes and has been the Sydney home of the Australian Governor General since 1936. Visiting heads of state are entertained at the residence.

Cockatoo Island is the biggest island on Sydney Harbour. It has a long maritime history which began in 1839. In that year it was established as a convict settlement. The island was used as a shipyard for many years and some of its industrial past has been preserved. It now serves as a showcase for art projects in Sydney.

Garden Island is the Royal Australian Navy’s base on the east coast of Australia. The island was originally used as a garden to grow food for early settlers. Part of the island is open to visitors and it has several examples of early graffiti from first fleet convicts. The view from the public area is unmatched.
